If you have ever read something AI wrote for you and thought, 'this sounds nothing like me,' you are not alone. It is the most common fear I hear from coaches and entrepreneurs. The good news is it is completely fixable.
Why AI Sounds Generic
AI defaults to a safe, middle-of-the-road voice because it was trained on a huge mix of writing styles. Without specific guidance, it picks the average. And the average is boring.
Step 1: Capture Your Voice
Before AI can sound like you, it needs to know how you sound. Take three pieces of content you wrote and love. Paste them into a document and ask AI to describe your voice back to you.
- What tone do you use? Warm, direct, playful, serious?
- What words or phrases do you repeat?
- What words would you never use?
- How do you open and close your pieces?
Step 2: Build a Brand Voice File
Take what AI described and turn it into a short file. This becomes your brand-voice.md. Every time you start a new AI conversation, this file tells it exactly how to show up.
Your biggest fear is sounding fake. A voice file is how you make AI sound more like you, not less.
Step 3: Review Everything
AI is your assistant, not your replacement. Read everything it produces. Tweak the words that do not fit. Over time, your voice file gets sharper and the edits get smaller. That is the goal.
You stay the source of truth. AI just helps you move faster while sounding exactly like yourself.
